Last winter, while listening to one of my favorite podcasts, Smart Passive Income, I learned about this awesome service called Prep Dish.  They provide weekly menus for you to use for your family meal prep. COOL!

Mike, my husband has been doing the cooking the past few years now since he is the one who is home a couple of hours before dinner.  This usually meant coming up with a meal by 3pm and whipping it up by 7 or later.  Sound familiar?

Despite that fact that Mike hated figuring out what to make every night, he was not so sure about relinquishing this duty to a service. To convince him, I offered to do the meal prep the first week.

Well, we liked it.

Here are two services that I recommend choosing from.

  1. Prep Dish – Paleo and Gluten Free Sign up for their newsletter to get the free menu Prep Dish
  2. Vegetarian, Gluten free, Classic and Paleo I have not tried this service but I checked out the free menus. I really like the plan above much better but if you want other diet options you can check these out: http://www.JenBeFit.com/TheFresh20

The one we use is Prep Dish – they offer gluten free and paleo plans. While we do not consider ourselves to fall into either diet, we found that the Paleo plan was not too different from what we like to eat. I like that we are using whole foods and are cooking pretty much from scratch. Also, I like how this plan has introduced to natural, healthier carbs. I used to overload on simple carbs but now I have found veggies and gluten free foods that I enjoy even more.

5 months later we are still using Prep Dish – I love how it has given us one less thing to plan. It has also provided more structure at home.

Friday – shopping list. I print out the plan for the week and modify the shopping list. This is a 5 minute exercise where I go over the menu and customize it to what we like.  For example we might switch the spaghetti squash for zucchini noodles. If we want to eat less “clean” we’ll go for spaghetti.  We often skip the dessert on the menu and I might make my own simple salad rather than what is in the plan. After the modifications, we add other things to the list … (toilet paper, breakfast foods, etc)

Saturday – Mike goes shopping.  It is also leftover day. I bring leftovers to work for lunch during the week but if there is anything else remaining I will have it for lunch on this day. It’s nice not to have to think about what to make! My goal is to empty the storage containers so we have them cleaned and ready for Sunday meal prep!

Sunday – I cook. Yes, Mike is free from the majority of the cooking. This was not my original plan … little did I know that when I proposed to try Prep Dish that I would end up with this responsibility!

Monday to Thursday – Dish day. Mike still gets home earlier than I do so he does whatever chopping, mixing, warming, cooking is needed. Still this is less stressful since he simply has to follow the instructions and it takes 30 to 45 minutes tops. No last minute scrambling! Isn’t it cool how Mike and I have split our cooking responsibilities? It works out nicely for us!

Friday and Sunday – Prep Dish includes 4 dinners, breakfast, salad and dessert in the plan so Friday through Sunday is NOT on the menu. The kids get to choose this meal. They created their own list of favorite dishes and we pick something from that list.

I love how this program has helped us simplify and organize!
