Not what I expected
So after a week of experiencing pain and soreness on my right hand, I appeased my husband and went to the doctor. I sat in the examining room fully expecting to hear strong advice on easing up on training to allowing my wrist and to heal so I could do my big race in two weeks.
What I didn’t expect was the doctor to send me to the X-ray room a SECOND time to get another picture taken a specific angle. That second X-ray HURT just a little.
Now I was worried.
The diagnosis and recommendation: scaphoid fracture and surgery as early as Thursday. My exam quickly turned into pre-op where I was given this brace, nausea and pain prescriptions and the address of the surgery center.
My first question …. CAN I DO MY RACES? At least ONE of them?? You might think I’m silly but I cried a little as I sat in the examining room mentally saying goodbye to the 2 races I had been preparing for all spring and summer.
70.3 miles is a BIG distance for me and I was feeling ready for the challenge of conquering the distance not ONCE but TWICE this fall. I was so pumped! Now I won’t be able to feel the achievements and cross those finish lines.
I usually end my posts on a positive and grateful note. I will eventually reflect on how I’m lucky i am and how this will ultimately be a good thing but right now i just want to grieve a little and let this all sink in.
